Flight Distance Calculator
Distances.online is a free distance calculator. Pick two or more cities, or click anywhere on the map, and it shows the straight-line (great-circle) distance, an estimated flight time, the road distance and the driving time, with both routes drawn on the map.
How it works
Type a city name in the search box and choose it from the suggestions, or click a point on the map.
Add a second place. You can add more to measure a multi-stop trip.
Tap "Calculate distance" to get the road route, the kilometres by road and the estimated driving time.
What you get
The straight-line distance uses the haversine formula, the shortest path between two points on the Earth's surface, and the flight time assumes an average cruising speed of 850 km/h. The road distance comes from real road data (OpenStreetMap-based routing), so it reflects the highways you would actually drive. Results are in kilometres. No account is needed and the calculator works in nine languages.
Frequently asked questions
Is the distance calculator free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no limit on searches and no app to install.
What is the difference between straight-line and road distance?
The straight line is the shortest path over the Earth's surface, roughly what a plane follows. The road distance follows actual highways and is usually 10 to 30% longer.
Can I measure the distance between any two points?
Yes. Besides cities you can click any point on the map, for example a beach or a mountain, and the calculator uses its coordinates.
